    JAYALGER’S WEEKLY BEAR TRAP

“Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated.” - Arnold Palmer

PREVIEW AND PICKS FOR THE WGC ST JUDE INVITATIONAL 2019 The Course - TPC Southwind

Returning to the United States, we move to TPC Southwind in Memphis, TN for the fourth installment of the WGC series. The WGC - St. Jude Invitational has replaced the WGC - Bridgestone Invitational originally played at Firestone Country Club in Akron, OH. The course was designed by Ron Prichard in 1987 with consultation from Hubert Green and Fuzzy Zoeller. The course went under further renovation in 2004 where several trees were removed, and bentgrass greens were converted to a more stable bermudagrass, which is compatible with the local climate. This course traverses the beautiful landscape of Tennessee’s lakes and streams and is a par 70 and 7,244 yards with four par 3s and two par 5s.

    Hole breakdown is as follows:
    Par 3 4
    Par 4 <400 1
    Par 4 400-450 4
    Par 4 450-500 7
    Par 4 >500 0
    Par 5 2
    Total 18

    The Stats to Consider

    • After running correlations, it is no surprise that scoring on the par 4s is very important especially with 7 holes in the 450-500 yard range.
    • T2G is very important this week. Looking at the previous winners, they were all elite T2G.
    • It’s a no cut event. You’ll need a lot of birdies over the four days to win a GPP.
    • After looking closely at the course, all of the landing zones are in the 290-300 yard range even with all the doglegs. I was a little surprised that OTT wasn’t a little more correlated (though SG:BS is), but most of the second shots will be in the 150-175 yard range. Therefore, SG:APP is very important this week.
    • Even though the fairways are tree lined, the rough is not penal if golfers miss the fairway. Thus, hitting fairways and accuracy is not as vital as on other courses.

    Quotes about the course
    • BILLY HORSCHEL: I think this is an underrated golf course. I think it’s probably one of the Top-5 golf courses in my opinion.
    • BROOKS KOPEKA: I think it’s perfect for bombers. A great course. Fairways are 60 yards wide, hundred yards wide, feels like. Hit it over 300 yards, it’s paradise for you.
    • RYAN PALMER: I love this golf course. I’ve always loved coming here. Something about these greens that gets me going. I’ve had success on this golf course, and, you know, it’s great to get another low round in.
