    JAYALGER’S WEEKLY BEAR TRAP

“There are no shortcuts in the quest for perfection.” - Ben Hogan

PREVIEW AND PICKS FOR THE ROCKET MORTGAGE CLASSIC 2019 The Course - Detroit Golf Club

We next move to the midwest part of the country to a new course for the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club just outside of downtown Detroit. This classic Donald Ross designed course sports many of the attributes that made Ross very well known including diagonal hazards and multi-tiered, undulated greens. This traditional course has a north course, featuring narrow tree-lined fairways, and a shorter south course that features six par 3s for its members. However, the course has been revamped for the RMC and will be a par-72 playing 7300 yards with four par 3s and two par 5s.

    Hole breakdown is as follows:
    Par 3 4
    Par 4 <400 4
    Par 4 400-450 2
    Par 4 450-500 4
    Par 4 >500 0
    Par 5 4
    Total 18

    Course Data

    Course Data by Par

    Course Stats
    • Par 72
      • Hole #1 on the South course will play as Hole #3 for the tournament
      • The rest of the holes are from the North course which were rerouted for the tournament
    • 7,303 yards
      • Tee boxes were extended to increase the yardage from what is played by its members
    • Architect(s)
      • Donald Ross (1916)
    • Turf
      • Fairways - Mixed grasses
        • Undulating leaving no flat lies
        • Classic Ross with diagonal hazards (Hole 18 with drainage canal cutting through the fairway in front of the green)
      • Greens - Poa/Bent (80/20)
        • Multi-tiered and severely undulated greens
        • Early report suggests 12+ on Stimpmeter
      • Rough
        • Additional early report suggests 4.5” rough. Recent rain has been plenty. Golfers should just avoid the rough as will most likely be tall and penal.
    • Signature Holes 14-16
      • Hole 14 (par 5), hole 15 (par 3) and 16 (par 4)
      • The first golfer who scores an eagle, hole-in-one and a birdie (3-1-3), Detroit’s area code, will have a donation made in his name to a local charity for 313k

    Brief Tournament Information
    • Full field event with 156 golfers
      • Field Strength - below average
      • Notables in the field (OWGR as of 6/24/19) - Dustin Johnson (2), Gary Woodland (12), Rickie Fowler (14), Bubba Watson (22), Patrick Reed (25) and last week’s winner Chez Reavie (48)
    • Standard cut of 70 plus ties

    The Stats to Consider
    • With this being the inaugural event on this course, we’ll have to focus on the course.
    • Find golfers who excel on Poa.
    • Bombers may have some advantage as this is a longer course.
    • Finding the fairway will be important as the rough has been reported to be tall.
    • Find Donald Ross specialists.
    • Despite the length and narrow fairways, I still think this will be a birdie fest, and therefore, find golfers who can make a lot of birdies.
